Writer/editor sought for Crimes of War website
The Crimes of War Project is seeking to hire a qualified writer/editor to work on its website www.crimesofwar.org. The position will probably be offered on a part-time basis (3 days per week) and could be based in the United Kingdom or United States.
The Crimes of War Project is a non-governmental organisation based in the UK and US that works to raise public awareness of the laws applying to armed conflict and their application in practice. Our website is an essential part of our work. It provides clear and accurate summaries of all important developments in the field, as well as in-depth analysis of particularly significant or controversial questions. We are looking to build on the website’s reputation so far to establish it as a central point of reference for anyone trying to understand the many topical questions surrounding international humanitarian law, war crimes and international justice in the contemporary world. The person hired for this position will play an essential part in the expansion of the website, working closely with the Crimes of War Project’s executive director.
Job Description: The writer/editor will have day-to-day responsibility for all aspects of the website, and will be responsible for maintaining the site and overseeing its editorial direction, as well as writing regular news updates. Particular responsibilities include:
Following developments in contemporary armed conflict, war crimes and international justice and suggesting stories to be covered.
Working closely with the Crimes of War Project’s executive director and other staff to commission and edit material for publication on the site.
Writing regular updates for the “On the News” section about significant and newsworthy developments.
Maintaining the website’s email notification list and writing announcements of significant new pieces.
Updating the resources section of the website.
Posting new material to the site and liaising with our web designer about complex pieces.
Qualifications: The successful applicant will have a good knowledge of international humanitarian law, most likely having studied it as part of an advanced degree in law, human rights or a related subject. Experience of working in this area, for instance for an advocacy organization, is highly desirable. The ability to write about complex subjects in clear and accessible English is essential. Applicants should have good editing skills, and be comfortable about learning to use simple web-publication software (Adobe Contribute). Applicants should also be able to work quickly, pay attention to detail, be willing to use their own initiative and be comfortable working independently or as part of a small team.
Salary according to experience. The job will probably be offered on a 3-day-per-week basis, but other arrangements may be considered.
Please send applications as soon as possible to Lauren McCollough at office@crimesofwar.org . Applicants should include a resume with a salary history and writing sample if available. For further information, in the United States call 202-638-0230 or email office@crimesofwar.org.
