A warning on the Web’s birthday

A warning from Tim Berners-Lee today, on the Web’s 20th birthday (or is the birthday tomorrow, March 13? Anyway). Deep packet inspection is the electronic equivalent of opening people’s mail:

…What is at stake is the integrity of the internet as a communications medium…. Clearly we must not interfere with the internet, and we must not snoop on the internet. If we snoop on clicks and data, we can find out a lot more information about people than if we listen to their conversations.

Berners-Lee is speaking at Cern tomorrow, it will be webcast (via Børge).
