Magnum – a model for journalists?

The photojournalists at Magnum are celebrating their first 60 years with a festival in New York and lots of new and historical material online. Researching Magnum and reading up for a piece on professional vs amateur publishing (in Norwegian), got me thinking about how journalism will be organized and produced in coming years. Could Magnum’s model inspire innovative solutions today? The agency is organized as a cooperative; the photojournalists are the owners. The agency markets and promotes the work of the owners. You hear more and more often that credibility is or will be transferred from media institutions to individual journalists. Magnum seems to offer the best of both worlds: A guarantee that you can preserve your individual style and identity and build your “brand” while being part of a collective with a set of shared goals and ethics and a strong brand of its own, and marketed in a professional way. Another option worth considering is the partner model common in lawyer firms, where partners are owners. Another way to more responsibility and a bigger slice.
